… beware these gimmicks!
- Never respond to email asking for your user ID, password, credit card number, birthday, expiration date or credit card security code.
- If you receive an email from a company representing itself as your contracting company and you are not sure it was sent by them, do not click on any links in the email.
- Never share your passwords with anyone. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential. If you suspect someone may have your password or has accessed your account, please contact that company immediately.
- Select a password that is unique and difficult to guess. As a general rule, it is a good idea to choose a password that uses both letters and numbers, and even symbols if permitted. Avoid using a password that is easy to figure out; do NOT use your email address as your password or other common passwords such as password, "1234", etc.
- Change your password frequently.
- Do not use the same password for everything.
- Make sure the company you choose can be reached by telephone, not just by email or through their website.
- Stay informed. Keep abreast of consumer fraud trends. A few excellent sources of information include your local newspaper and websites hosted by the United States Federal Trade Commission and the National Association of Attorneys General.
- Contact your State Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs if you are uncertain or suspicious of a telephone, mail or email solicitation.
- If you feel you have been the victim of fraud, contact the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) or contact the Federal Trade Commission.
